THE STANDING COMMITTEE TO RETAIN LEGAL COUNSEL

As any Chancellor is unable to represent both the Standing Committee and the Bishop in a disagreement, our Chancellor has recommended that the Standing Committee retain Michael Rehill, Esq.  Bishop Clay Matthews, Executive Director, Office of Pastoral Development for The Episcopal Church, has stated that the Standing Committee is entitled to independent legal counsel.  Therefore, the Chancellor, Frank Helminski, Esq., in the presence of the Bishop and Rob Rogers, former Diocesan Treasurer and Interim Chief Financial Officer, gave his opinion on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 that:

(1) The Standing Committee could engage an attorney, and

(2) That the retainer check for $2,500 should be sent to Michael Rehill, Esq. on behalf of the Standing Committee.

The Chancellor agreed to put this directive in writing to Rob Rogers and has done so.  On Monday, September 18, 2006, at a special meeting of the Standing Committee, the Bishop refused to issue the retainer check.

The Standing Committee, therefore, has decided to request financial support from individuals in the Diocese to cover the $2,500 retainer necessary.  We have consulted with Mr. Rehill, and he has advised that checks may be made out to:  Michael Rehill, Esq., with a notation "Standing Committee - DioPa".  Checks should be sent to:

Arlene McGurk
            Apartment 101
            11 South Letitia St.
            Philadelphia, PA 19106-3018

Arlene is Secretary of the Standing Committee and will keep an accounting of the contributions.  She will record all contributions prior to sending the checks to Mr. Rehill, who will credit each to our account.

No contribution is too small.  We are asking for your support so that we may secure appropriate and competent counsel as we seek to carry out the responsibilities of Standing Committee on behalf of the Diocese.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Standing Committee.  We also ask for your prayers during this difficult time.
